Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting areas rich in oil glands: mainly the scalp, face (sides of the nose, eyebrows), ears, and chest.

It causes:

Greasy or yellowish flakes/scales

Itchy, red, or inflamed skin

Oily appearance

Sometimes, mild hair thinning occurs if the scalp is severely affected

It is not contagious, yet it often appears and then diminishes at periodic intervals.

Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, which is usually present on the skin.

Stress and fatigue may also act as possible triggers.

Genetic predisposition

Treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis

1. Medicated Shampoos (for scalp SD)

Use 2-3 times a week, alternating with a mild shampoo.

Look for active ingredients:

Zinc pyrithione (ZPTO) Antifungal + anti-inflammatory

Selenium sulfide reduces yeast and oil production

Salicylic acid exfoliates dead skin and removes scales

Tip: Apply medicated shampoo directly to the scalp, leave for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

2. Topical Treatments (for face, ears, chest, or severe scalp cases)

Antifungal creams:

Ketoconazole 2%, Ciclopirox, or Clotrimazole (apply 1–2 times/day).

Mild corticosteroid creams:

Hydrocortisone 1% or Desonide: Use short-term, 5-7 days to decrease redness and itching.

Nonsteroid alternatives (for long-term use):

Pimecrolimus (Elidel) or Tacrolimus (Protopic) — safe for face or sensitive areas.

Keep yourself hydrated and avoid excess sugar, fried foods, and alcohol. Manage your stress-it is a major trigger; try yoga, meditation, or exercise. Sleep 7–8 hours daily.
