About Folliculitis
It is a skin condition related to inflammation or infection of the hair follicles. Folliculitis usually appears as tiny red or white bumps resembling pimples along the root of hair. It is generally mild and will be self-limiting, though in some situations, it may need medical attention to avoid scarring or deeper infections.
Common causes include bacterial infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus, fungal infection, ingrown hairs, friction because of tight clothing, or shaving irritation.
Description/ Symptoms
Folliculitis may cause
Small, red bumps or white-headed pimples around hair follicles
Itching or tenderness in the involved area
Burning sensation or mild pain
Blisters filled with pus that may crust over
Scarring or dark spots after healing, in severe or chronic cases
Folliculitis can happen anywhere that hair grows, which is usually on the scalp, areas around the beard, chest, back, buttocks, and legs.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the cause and severity:
Mild cases: Often resolve with good hygiene and warm compresses.
Bacterial infections-Treated with topical or oral antibiotics.
Fungal infections: These require antifungal creams or medication.
Ingrown hair-related: Gentle exfoliation or chemical peels may help.
Chronic/recurrent folliculitis: Laser hair removal can decrease the likelihood of recurrence by removing the affected hair follicles.
Always consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
